Experience a fresh format – theatre on screen – and join the discussion afterward

The theater performance RED [RENAISSANCE] was a major success in Ukraine, where it was seen by over 60 000 viewers. And while the performance cannot be staged outside of Ukraine due to the troupe’s inability to tour abroad, the film version offers a unique opportunity to witness this powerful experience.

RED [RENAISSANCE] is a historical musical about a unique phenomenon in Ukrainian culture – the “Slovo” House (translated from Ukrainian "word"). This legendary building in Kharkiv housed the most prominent Ukrainian writers of the time. What began as a dream –artists living together, exchanging ideas, and drawing inspiration – soon turned into a nightmare. The fairytale of "Slovo" gradually transformed into what the NKVD (secret police in USSR) would call a “pre-trial detention center.”

The screening will be followed by a discussion titled “Myth-Making in Film as a Tool of Decolonization,” where we will explore the role of cinema in deconstruction of historical myths and shaping a new national identity through the Ukrainian experience. For the discussion, we have invited Daniil Butenko, civil activist, born and raised in north-eastern Ukraine, who will share his journey of conscious self-decolonization, in which cinema played a great role. We warmly invite people from diverse cultural backgrounds who feel connected to this topic to join the conversation and share their perspectives.

Note: the conversation will be in English.
